The Recipe How-To

Sweet, sour and shrimp - the perfect flavor trifecta.
Sweet, sour and shrimp – the perfect flavor trifecta.

Now, this is where the magic happens. Get your aprons on and let’s start making some Crystal Shrimp with Sweet and Sour Sauce!

Step 1: Preparing the Shrimp

First things first, we need to prepare our shrimp. Make sure they are peeled and deveined because nobody wants to eat a shrimp with the shell on. After washing them, marinate them with some soy sauce and 1 tsp of cornstarch for about 15 minutes. This will help the shrimp absorb the flavors and make them more tender.

Step 2: Making the Sauce

Let’s move on to making our sweet and sour sauce. In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of water, 1/4 cup of rice vinegar, 3 tablespoons of ketchup, 1/4 cup of pineapple juice, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of chili sauce, and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. Stir all the ingredients together until there are no lumps.

Step 3: Cooking the Vegetables

Now it’s time to cook our vegetables. Heat up your wok or pan and add some oil. Once it’s hot, put in your chopped veggies, including diced yellow onions, sliced green pepper and julienned carrots. Stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes until they become fragrant and slightly soft.

Step 4: Adding the Shrimp

Next up, we’re putting in our marinated shrimp into the same pan with our vegetables. Cook each side for about 1-2 minutes until they turn pinkish orange.

Step 5: Making the Sauce Mix

Push our cooked shrimp and vegetables up to your pan’s sides, creating a well or space at the center. Pour in our sweet and sour sauce mix into this well and let it bubble for about 1-2 minutes while stirring constantly till it thickens up.

Step 6: Serving & Enjoying!

Finally, it is time to serve! Garnish with some toasted sesame seeds if you want that extra crunch factor. Serve over steamed rice, fried rice, or noodles – or any other preferred starches of your choice! Feel free to add more chili sauce if you like your dishes spicier too! And voila – a zesty shrimp medley that everyone will show interest towards grabbing seconds from!
