Ingredient List
To make salmon spread or dip easy-peasy, gather these ingredients at arm’s reach:
- 8 oz smoked salmon
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
These seven ingredients will give you a basic salmon spread recipe that is both flavorful and creamy. But wait, there’s more! You can always experiment with variations and substitutions to create different renditions of this dish that satisfy your taste buds.
The Recipe How-To
Let’s get started with the easy and delicious Salmon Spread Recipe!
Prepping the Ingredients
Before we begin, make sure that all the ingredients are prepared and ready. Soften the cream cheese and make sure it is at room temperature by taking it out of the fridge 30 minutes before you start. You can either roughly chop or flake the smoked salmon using a fork or break it into small pieces inside a bowl.
Next, wash and chop the fresh dill, green onions, and red onion finely. Measure out the sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, dried dill weed, salt, and ground black pepper to avoid measuring during the process.
Putting It All Together
First, in a large mixing bowl or food processor, combine softened cream cheese and sour cream. Mix them together until there are no lumps of cream cheese left. You can use an electric mixer if you don’t want to whisk by hand.
Add mayonnaise to the mixture using a sturdy spatula. Stir until all ingredients are combined smoothly.
Then add salmon (both smoked salmon and canned salmon), chopped green onions, red onion, fresh dill, lemon juice Worcestershire sauce, dried dill weed, salt and ground black pepper. Mix them well until smooth!
Chill It Until Ready to Serve
Finally, transfer your salmon spread to a serving dish or an airtight container if planning to have it as a make-ahead appetizer for parties! Refrigerate for at least an hour until ready to serve. To add some garnish on top of your spread might freshen and brighten up the dish!
Serving Suggestion
Serve with toasted bread slices or crackers for dipping. Or let guests assemble their own canapés by offering additional toppings such as capers or additional chopped herbs such as parsley or chives.

Substitutions and Variations
When it comes to making this savory and flavorful salmon spread, there are plenty of substitutions and variations that you can consider in order to tailor the recipe to your taste preferences or dietary needs.
One substitute worth mentioning is canned salmon, which can be used instead of fresh or smoked salmon. While canned salmon may not be the best choice for everyone, it’s a convenient alternative and can offer a similar texture and flavor profile as fresh or smoked salmon.
If you’re looking for a dairy-free option, try using vegan cream cheese and sour cream instead of the regular dairy products. These alternatives still provide a creamy and smooth consistency while catering to specific dietary restrictions.
For those who enjoy a touch of heat, consider throwing in some chopped jalapeno peppers or a sprinkling of cayenne pepper to add an extra kick of flavor to the dish. Finely chopped red onions also make a great addition and add some depth to the spread’s taste.
Furthermore, you can vary the ratio of mayonnaise, cream cheese, and sour cream depending on how thick or thin you want your spread to be. If you prefer a thicker texture, simply add more cream cheese or reduce the amount of sour cream that you use.
Additionally, different types of herbs such as parsley or chives can be added to complement both the flavor and color of the spread. If you don’t have dill available, try using herbs such as rosemary or thyme instead; they add another layer of complexity and refreshing aromas.
Experimenting with different combinations of ingredients ultimately depends on your taste preference and creativity. Be adventurous by exploring different flavors until you end up with an exceptional salmon spread that is uniquely yours.
Serving and Pairing
When it comes to serving this delectable salmon spread, I recommend laying out a platter of crispy crackers or sliced baguette next to the bowl of creamy goodness. The crunch from the crackers or the chewiness of the bread will be the perfect complement to the silky texture of the salmon spread.
For an added burst of flavor, I suggest you pair this dish with a crisp white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Riesling. The acidity in these wines will help to cut through the creaminess of the spread while also bringing out the flavors of fresh dill and lemon juice.
However, if wine isn’t your thing, don’t fret! A refreshing iced tea or a citrusy kombucha would also make great pairings for this dish.
If you’re feeling extra fancy, you could even serve this salmon spread as part of a larger charcuterie board with cured meats, artisan cheeses, and other savory treats. The salty and smoky flavors from the smoked salmon would complement any cured meat, while the creaminess of the spread pairs perfectly with soft or hard cheeses.
No matter how you choose to serve this salmon spread, I guarantee it will be a crowd-pleaser at any party or gathering.
Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating
When it comes to party planning, make-ahead recipes are the real MVPs. Luckily, this salmon spread recipe is a great candidate for prepping in advance. You can mix up the spread and chill it in an airtight container for up to two days before your event.
Storing the leftover salmon spread is easy-peasy. Once the guests have left, simply transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to four days. Be sure to give it a good stir with a fork or whisk before serving again.
If you’re looking to reheat any leftover spread, I must warn you: this recipe doesn’t lend itself well to reheating. The smoked salmon can get rubbery and the texture will change, so it’s best to serve this dip cold or at room temperature.
But don’t you fret! There are plenty of ways to use up any leftover salmon spread that don’t involve reheating. Spread it on toast or bagels for breakfast, use it as a sandwich filling for lunch, or even toss it with cooked pasta for a flavorful and easy dinner.
To sum up, with proper storing and serving tips, leftovers are not an issue at all with this crowd-pleasing salmon spread recipe.
Tips for Perfect Results
Cooking salmon spread may seem like a very easy task, but mastering the recipe can take some practice. But don’t worry, with a few helpful tips, you’ll be serving up the perfect salmon spread every time! Here are some of my favorite tricks for perfect salmon spread.
First and foremost, always use quality ingredients. Fresh dill and smoked salmon can really make the difference in flavor. When buying smoked salmon, look for the best quality you can find – it’s worth it!
Next, make sure your cream cheese is at room temperature before mixing. This will make it easier to beat with an electric mixer or food processor and will prevent lumps from forming.
Another tip is to mix your sour cream and lemon juice separately before incorporating into the cream cheese mixture. This ensures even distribution throughout the spread.
Seasoning is also important. Taste your spread as you go and adjust seasoning as needed. I like to add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste but feel free to experiment with your preferred seasonings.
When it comes to presentation, garnish with fresh dill and thinly sliced green onions for an extra pop of color and flavor. Don’t be afraid to get creative with the toppings!
Finally, remember that practice makes perfect. Keep trying until you’ve nailed the perfect balance of tangy, savory and creamy deliciousness in your salmon spread. With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to impress your guests with an amazing appetizer every time!
